The Garden

A garden planted eastward
Rivers running through
Every tree for eating
Shade and fruit and dew

One tree in the middle
Bright, and left alone
Not a trick to catch them
Just a line made known

You are free
You are trusted
Every good tree bends your way
You are free
You are trusted
There is one you will not take
Love can draw a line and call it care
Trust is how you stay
You are free
You are trusted
In the garden, day by day

Creatures came up quietly
He gave each a name
And the names were fitting
No two were the same

Evening still felt empty
One voice on the air
Then a partner waking
So a life was shared

They could wander every pathway
Drink the river, taste the fruit
Only one bright branch was promised
Left alone, and left in view
Freedom held a single promise
And they knew it to be true

Free and trusted
Naming, walking
Neither one is left alone
